Chapter Three
Dis had served in the Great Hall before, when he was younger. The majority of the Unseelie had mainly ignored him or had treated him with dismissive contempt when they’d noticed him. He had poured their wine and served their food and tried not to be seen, and it had almost always worked. There was no way to avoid their attention tonight, however. As soon as they entered the hall, lit by blue and lavender torches but gaining no heat from them, every eye was on Dis.
Sable stayed wrapped around his arm, one hand still resting on his abdomen, low and suggestive in front of the court. She walked him down the long table in the centre of the hall until they reached the chairs at the end of it. Two of them, one for Dis and one for Sable. Marten stood behind them, and he was utterly motionless, powerless against his twin. Sable didn’t often fight with her brother, but clearly something had happened between them, and from the happy sound she made as they’d approached, she had won. She pushed Dis into a chair but ignored the spare, instead draping herself across his lap.
Dis stiffened reflexively, his body trying to push her off even as his mind railed that he was supposed to be compliant. Sable seemed to enjoy the motion, laughing gaily. “Are you so anxious to be had?” she asked playfully. “You will be soon enough, my pet.” She motioned for wine, and it seemed to break the spell of silence on the rest of the Winter Court.
It had been barely an hour since the Calydonian boar had been killed, but it had roasted fast and was brought to the table on long platters, dark, greasy meat that made Dis’ stomach turn when he smelt it. There were other offerings but the boar overshadowed them all. The Unseelie dug into it with glee, drinking the fairy wine and feasting on meat until their raucous noise rang through Dis’ head like a bell sounding just behind his eyes. Different fae approached to offer congratulations, talked and laughed with Sable, and took turns pushing bits of meat into Dis’ mouth, which Sable followed insistently with wine.
She writhed against him with every fresh approach, happily demonstrating her ownership, her claim on the changeling that none of the Winter Court had cared to notice before. Tonight he was a prize, though, with Sable claiming him loud and clear. She drank, then forced Dis to drink, and as time passed Dis found himself caring less and less about the discomfort, which shrank back to a tiny, insignificant thing. Her body against his was cold but he was hot, hot with wine and flushed with growing arousal from the way she moved, the dulcet tones of her laughter and the hands touching him, always touching him. They crawled like spiders over his body, but Dis felt it less the more intoxicated he became.
“Not unpretty, for a mortal,” Sable whispered in his ear, her lips brushing the shell of it.
